Roy Sproule
I am a visual musician. My brushes are my bow and the fibers of the canvas are the strings of my instrument. The colors and tones are the sounds I make to vibrate your retina. My songs are my compositions. The movements of my symphonies are figures, buildings, trees, lines splashes and drips. I like to paint figures and portraits because it seems to me that the easiest thing for most people to connect with is another person or in my case an image of a person. I like to paint buildings, trees, inanimate objects and surreal forms. Most of the time I make work centered around a location or an organization. Usually my theme is the importance of everything. I love to put as much detail as I can into most everything because I want people to realize how incomplete life would be if one atom were out of place. There is complexity and importance if in the most ugly and horrific item. An example of this is when I was painting a wall on a wall among the portraits I wanted to paint every pit and imperfection that I saw in the picture of the wall. I thought it was important to tell the complete story as best I could even the ugly parts. That is my the cord that I find in most all of my work. At times I analyze works that I have made years after I stopped working on them. Sometimes I find meanings that I could not find while I was in the fog of creation. I like to follow a stream of consciousness
approach when I am making a painting that has low creative restrictions. That means no matter how much I would love to be a perfectionist in a rigid way I am more of swimming fish moving in concert with or against the current. It all depends on what I feel and know will bring the best possible result given whatever the limitations are.
